I haven't seen this film in years but one scene I always wanted to know more about was the Church scene. Were the people in the church killed by the infected, were the bodies of those people dormant infected or was there a mass suicide or something?
They never really said, my guess would be that people went to the church for help/pray or whatever and it was probably a big massacre. I would say most of them were dead and few infected just “dormant” in the church until Jim starts yelling “HELLO”. It doesn’t really make much sense. But for me the biggest WTF of the movie is the diner scene. You see people dead at tables, some face down in food. Why and how were they killed? I mean it seems likely that the people were killed in the initial outbreak. As why would you be at a diner as the world is going to hell. But you would think if the infected attacked the people would at least get out of their booths and try to run or fight back. Just seemed an out of place scene in an otherwise good movie.
I've always gone of the assumption that not everyone who comes down with the disease goes berserk and runs around and attacks everyone. It appears that most people who contract the disease just die. Only a small percentage become Infected. In reality it's something of a flaw in the movie and one that I thought about when I first watched it back in 2002. So I just came up with a back-story.
I think the were all infected. Some happened to be dead tho. It was a mass den of infected where they slept during daylight. A tiresome pastiche of 1970s omega man, where the infected mutants also holled up on a church-type-place during the day.
I remember the director saying something like he wanted to make a reference to the mass killings in Rwanda circa 1994. People would seek refuge in Churchs. Many were massacred in church's and schools etc.
They weren't all dead. They were "sleeping". One or two (including the vicar), stirred when Jim roused them with his shouts of "HELLO". After he punched the vicar and ran out of the building, several more Infected chased him. But eventually many died of starvation as seen near the end from an aerial view.
"These days you have to boil someone before you can sleep with them"
> But eventually many died of starvation as seen near the end from an aerial view.
Speaking of, the first of the two dying guys in that scene (at least in my murky video copy off of YouTube) seemed to have light or blue eyes, not the red crazy ones. Huh?
I would say most were dead, a few infected. You have to remember that people got infected by contact with blood or saliva, but the infected are not looking to expose you to the virus, they simply want to kill you. So a few infected people would be enough to kill most of those locked up in a church.
I got the hint that it was a mass suicide. If the people in the church would've been attacked by the infected, they too, would've become one of the infected.
