Was Kingpin evil for the sake of being evil?

I think he was at least sincere in believing that no one was innocent or much different from him.

he says something along those lines during the fight at the end of the film.
in the netflix series, however, he DOES believe that he's doing the right thing and wants to "rebuild " the city , but by the end of season 1 it seems that he accepts his status as a villain and embraces it .
