Very Entertaining!
This movie is funny and scary, suspenceful in the vein of Hitchcock, with great performances, an awesome score, and a competent story. Well...pretty competent. Understandable at least. Balanced in its own a way. I enjoy it more with every re-watch.
I wonder if perhaps the film was meant to be a comment on tribalism and colonization?...The effects of spirituality on the family structure...? (Is there a such thing as coincidence?) ('It can't be luck...') ('Swing away!'). And then the little girl and her water.
But the water is also my only gripe about the film, and I know this has already been pointed out: Why would a species capable of interstellar (presumably) travel, stake out a planet that is composed mostly of water when they are clearly allergic to it? Seems like if they had the technology to find and secretly begin to invade our planet, they would also possess a bit of knowledge regarding our planet's atmosphere, and of their own biology. Just like us humans know we can't breathe carbon dioxide, they should have known to stay away from water. Shoot, the air we breathe is composed of water, so these creatures should have been dying from the onset.
Other than that, I found the film to be quite entertaining and even uplifting-- the film has a positive spirit to it. I like that it's about a family banding together, while also overcoming the demons of their past.
Anyway, just my two cents. Thanks for reading!
