For the final confrontation, Johnny Depp's character as a cowboy dressed in all black is a direct homage to Chilean mystical filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky's all dressed in black lone cowboy, El Topo, from his 1970 cult classic film El Topo (The Mole). Johnny Depp's character is blinded, bleeds out of his eyes, is left for dead and undergoes a transformation. In El Topo, the character El Topo also goes through a transformation as he is shot stigmata style, bleeds out of his wounds and is left for dead.
