Sonny's death

Why no investigation or charges for his father? Was he such a "good ole boy" that he was not investigated? I presume it was written off as a suicide, but the location of the fatal injury would not be the standard way to do it, and I would have thought would have raised questions based on that alone.

I guess it could have been viewed as an accident if no forensics were done.

A case like this goes to a coroner who must have ruled it a suicide. End of story

I do not understand why a coroner would have ruled it a suicide.

Though I was not able to find a chart of frequency of locations of a gunshot wound in suicides, I was able to find a writer's guide on scene differences in homicide and suicide:

* A shot to the side of the head, in the mouth, or to the front of the chest is usually suicide. Wounds located anywhere else are most likely homicide.

* Most suicide shots are at contact or near contact range, causing a burn mark around the wound and leaving gunpowder residue (which can be wiped off).

* Angle of the shot: Most suicide shots are angled slightly upward.

* Presence of gunpowder residue on victims hand the hand that fired the gun.

* A suicide victim will rarely shoot through clothing. If he shoots himself in the chest, which is unusual, he will open his shirt to expose the skin.

Given the circumstances of Sonny's death, I do not see how a coroner would have written Sonny's death off as a suicide, particularly with no investigation of the father. While watching the story, I expected Sonny's father to have been hauled in for an examination of his clothing and hands. The location of the wound was atypical for suicide. The dad seemed to have been close enough to have been coated in blood spray. Now that I know more about it, I could add that shooting through the clothing is more indicative of a homicide.

Sonny was alone in his room with his gun, possibly planning his own suicide. Suddenly, he got into a highly emotional knock down fight with his dad which may have played a role in his spontaneous decision to kill himself.
There were three graves shown in the back yard during Sonny's funeral. One was Sonny's, one was Buck's wife who committed suicide, the third was most likely Sonny's mother, who may also have committed suicide.

* "Presence of gunpowder residue on victims hand the hand that fired the gun."

Not correctly written, but you just answered your own question. Furthermore, there was a witness there (the father/grand father) that saw EXACTLY what happened.

This is a completely pointless thread.

Agreed. Any investigator worth their salt would have been able to determine this was death by self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sonny would have powder residue on his hands, the absense of residue on father's hands, the proximity of the wound, and the statement of two witnesses. Point is, the writer/director chose to have Sonny shoot himself in the chest, because that's an easy shot to set up. Shooting himself in the head would be a stunt too difficult to create realistically (either with props or CGI) given the film's budget.

If you don't understand what I mean, go look at photos of someone shot in the head. What you see in movies like "Full Metal Jacket" is a very, VERY sanitized version of what it looks like. Google images of Chinese prisoners executed at close range. Trust me, the photographs are bad enough, it's 10x worse seeing gunshot wounds to the head in IRL.
