Her son.

He was hit by a car?

So she says but I doubt it. I don't see why she'd bring up the autopsy in such a manner. She must've hit him physically, accidentally killing him. Just check out the scene where she says he got hit by a car. You'd call her bluff. She's guilty and afraid. We've already seen that she beats him up and he suffers a minor heartburn. And being that obese, his arteries must've been clogged.

Interesting but unlikely. I think that kid was a good bit heavier than her and unless she used a blunt object I don't see how she could have inflicted that kind of damage.

Plus if that were the case they would have fleshed out the storyline to hint at that more.

Not necessarily, why do you think that? Just look at her face, her acting says that she's lying. Just like Dicaprio's face when he tells Nicholson in The Departed that he's not the rat and that he's heard nothing of the sort. I don't see any other purpose of the first scene where she beats him up. Maybe that was to lead to this? Do you see any anger in her? She never said anything once, out of rage against whoever it was that was driving the car. She's drowning in guilt and regret man. And to escape from that pain, she has sex with the guy. *beep*, this is a disturbing movie with a beautiful payoff.

I really don't think there's any reason to disbelieve what she says happened is the truth. There was already a scene earlier where she scolded him for wandering into traffic which was the perfect set-up for him being hit by a car later on in the film. Yes, she beat him up, but I really don't think that was to indicate she would beat him to death, it was more to show her taking out her frustration at her issues in life on him. She didn't seem to be showing any hostility towards him when leaving the cafe. She brought up the autopsy just because it's a shocking thing to have to ponder your child being cut up post-mortem, but it would be necessary in a case of alleged vehicular homicide. She may have been worried about the police THINKING she had done something to him, but I really don't think she did. I honestly believe he was hit by a car.
