Big question, please help!

Okay, so he was obviously changed and deeply affected by his son's death, but why did he tell him that he didn't love him? I mean, did he hate his son? Why would he say that when his son is sitting there with a gun in his hand???

I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior.

Hank became like his Dad who was a macho bigot with no emotional warmth for anyone, not even his wife. It was a family tradition. Hank strutted around all macho in his father's presence but since his father was dying he was given a way out of his imposed upbringing, something he most likely longed for. Hank would even puke when he started to feel love since love was weakness in his mind, and weakness was not tolerated by his dad.
Hank continued to change after his son's death, resigning from his family's traditional work, admitting that he wasn't a very good father, etc. The death of Leticia's son Tyrell had a dramatic impact on him, in view of the sudden bloody violence related to the hit and run. The suicide of Hank's son was also sudden and bloody.

Good reply. It is a great experience to see Hank change.

I'm pretty sure that's not why he puked. He puked because he saw the picture of her dead husband in the bathroom, yk, the guy he executed.

reply

If you recall, he also puked at the beginning of the movie when he couldn't sleep, then he tried to open his son's bedroom door but it was locked, and this was before the execution. The director's cut commentary talks about why Hank did this.

reply

Okay, so did the director say it was sue to the emotional repression you described?

reply

I have the original release dvd with the hilarious outtakes and also the director's cut with commentary by the writer's and director Marc Forster and other extras. I don't remember the exact words since it's been a long time since I've listened to it but one aspect had to with Hank beginning to awaken to his imposed life.

reply

I see, like stress reaction of fear about the emotions he's feeling, the weakness.

Thanks.

I think you hit the nail on the head!

During the confrontation in the living room it looked as if Son was about to shoot Dad's ass so Dad said he hated him to show he was not afraid of the gun esp in front of Grandpa. It was quite a shock at least to me when the son turned the gun on himself instead.

-- Mothershytter... Son of an ass!!

reply

I think many were shocked at his sudden suicide, including me.

Hank wanted to look like a big man in front of his own father, so he said that he hated Sonny because to say he loved him would make him look feminine and weak. In reality, Hank was the weak one, both physically (Sonny totally kicked his ass) and spiritually (he lets Buck goad him into harassing the black boys from next door).

reply

In his twisted mind, to toughen up his son? Or trying to act tough to call out his son's bluff? Another lame attempt to show his son how bad ass he is? All lame. Like abusive people.
