she was a little over-harsh on her kid's weight issues

i know it was because she cared about him and his health, but slapping and shoving the kid around and calling him names like "fat piggy" and stuff just seemed a lot closer to cruelty rather than tough love.

reply

A little? She was downright cruel! And she was supposed to be, to mirror Hank's cruelty to his son.

I guess it was supposed to be a reflection of her frustration and anger over having her husband on death row. Although I wonder if she had ever been a happy person.

But it's atyical for two slim parents to have such a fat child. It seems the author needed a scapegoat and a weakness for her son, just as Sonny was perceived to be weak.

well with all the hectic and complicated stuff that was going on in her life at the time, i think her kid's obesity should be the last of her concerns. but eh, it's probably just me.

reply

It wasn't just about her kid's obesity. She was upset about everything that was going on in her life and she just took it out on her kid. Her frustation over his obesity and his sneaking candy bars was just the trigger that set her off.

reply

ah, that makes much more sense. good call.

yea i figured it had to be something more than just her kid's health problems. otherwise, that would just be plain bad parenting. then again, bad parenting seems to have a lot to do with the film's message.

reply

Yes and no. He was wrong to hide the candy. I understand her perspective. She could have expressed herself a different way

I read that Halle hated that part of the script. After she performed it, she bawled her eyes out and told the boy how sorry she was.

reply

I'm not surprised to hear that. That looked like a tough scene. I was wondering how that kid took it.

DISPLAY thy breasts, my Julia!

reply

She was acting out remember, this was on the day her husband was getting executed. And she had drank a little too. She was obviously taking her upset out on him. Still not right of course...

reply

Definitely. She can smoke a cigarette every 5 minutes but he can't eat candy?

this is a little grey area for me...

her and his father are both skinny. and she is dangerously skinny if you ask me. what excuse does that family have for their son being as obese as he is?

working in an area where a majority of the people are black and Hispanic, most of these people are also on public assistance. which is fine if they didn't do what Leticia and her son did in this film: spend their money on ciggs, booze and candy. they spend what money they do have on status symbols and entertainment things [booze, ciggs and candy are not medically necessary] and not on even a loaf of bread.

Reading the paper can really be depressing. Mr. Dithers fired Dagwood again.
