Joseph Gordin-Levitt

He played "Sam" in the movie, but was his name ever mentioned by any of the chracters? WHO WAS HE? I would catch a glimpse of him from time to time, in the background with a crazy sock hat on, but did he actually have a "role"? Speaking lines? Action scenes? Help me out here.

Ummm... yeah, he was the #2 to the Toby character. He always had the Gilligan-style hat on and was saying the most ridiculous "Yo, dat's wack!" lines.

You had to be blind to miss him.

Regards,
Jon Heese

reply

I guess I was blind. I do remember the hat, but I don't remember any dialogue. Oh well. Thanks, anyway.

He was also the one in the video scene waving the gun and ranting about how "no 16th street punk blah blah blah" and he'd "die for her and" etc etc ..."word"(paraphrased to avoid writing too much of a spoiler) :P

There are two types of movies on cable; the good ones, and the ones that are on when you're home!

Toby's main sidekick or best friend, whatever. He was the worst actor in the film and was really obnoxiuos. I mean, they all played posers and the whole faux gansta thing was one of the main concepts in the movie, but he overacted really bad. He has done some good work, but now, if anybody ever mentions to me that he should play the joker again, I will vomit. He's a solid character actor, but nothing special by any means.

reply

thats who the character was... he wasn't portraying a "realistic" person whos just moderately acts like a gangster... cant that be understood?

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

I don't agree.
I've been keeping my eyes on him, and I gotta say - he was HORRIBLE in this, but in other movies he has done some pretty amazing work. You should see the movies "Mysterious Skins", "Brick", and "The Lookout". His performance in those are definitely something special. He's got talent.

Regular Joe is the greatest young actor in Hollywood

reply

Honestly I thought he was the best thing in the film. Excellent comedic performance. Doesn't everybody know a wigger like that? Everyone was cracking up whenever he had a line-- 'yooooo, shawty got a rap sheet and ish" haha

reply

I don't think his acting was horrible in this- it's the character. With lines like those, it's pretty much required to overact because that's exactly what every single one of those "wigga" kids was doing. They were going above and beyond to try to fulfill some f-ed up stereotype of what they thought every black person acted like.

Granted, this role was by no means spectacular or even mediocre. It was so outlandish you can't help but laugh and I think that's exactly how Joe played it off. It's supposed to be ridiculously funny because the only person who takes Sam seriously is Sam.

Along with the movies you mentioned, I've also seen the entire 3rd Rock series, not to mention 10 Things. Joe knows comedy and he knows how to poke fun at stereotypes subtly and that's exactly what he did here.

I think every actor is allowed one or two complete and utter *beep* ups as far as scripts and films are concerned. Let this be Joe's.

To the guy who said Joe can't be a revamped version of the Joker or, say, the Riddler, watch "Mysterious Skin," "The Lookout," "Manic," and "Brick."

He is gifted and dedicated. Sure, he won't be Heath ledger's Joker, but that's hardly the point. He'll be his own character and do spectacularly with it.

reply

On the Harsh Times board (also starring Freddy Rodriguez), people say Christian Bale was "overacting", but I think people have totally missed the point. The whole point of the characters Levitt and Bale play in the films is that they are overdoing it. Same goes for Hathaway's character in parts, the characters they are portraying aren't naturally like that, but are doing it to fit in.

reply

He was the kid with the hat on sideways spouting Wigger gibberish, in other words the guy who made you want to gouge your eyeballs out after you watched such bad acting in the first few minutes.

reply

I always thought it was the character that was embarassing and by no means bad acting. And seeing suburban white kids act as embarassingly as that, I woudl say that it was fairly spot on by JGL.

reply

Yeah I thought JGL did a good job as well.

And his name is mentioned. It's "Sammy" when it's said, but it's mentioned. If you have the film go to one of the school scenes, when they're at a locker. Toby says it, I think.

Right after Freddy Rodriguez's character makes Toby piss himself and they're back at school.

That last scene of Levitt tearing up in the car, shows the REAL character, not the one talking tough and getting high. He was really scared at that moment, he could've killed the women and their babies. When he & Tobey saw what they are doing and what could've happened to them, they couldn't go through with it. THAT scene showed Levitt's acting chops right there. Loved that scene.

I would hope that he got a fat paycheck out of the deal.

They say that this film sat on the shelves for years, then was yanked from the director, and re-cut by the producers. And, as they say, "mistakes were made". I think that it might have been smarter to kick it up a couple of degrees, and make it a full-on parody.

He reminded me of the Rapper Bizzy Bone in this movie.

Here's a clue viamber, he's the character who looks like exactly like Joseph Gordon-Levitt wearing a hat.
