I love this quote. Im slightly disappointed that the individual who posted this quote on the "memorable quotes" page is seemingly oblivious as to what Nicks actually are. To clear it up, Nicks were a really cheap pair of trainers worn by poor kids in the 80's. If you were seen in a pair, everyone knew that your family were the poorest of the poor.

And they were awful.

Other "poor kid" trainers are;
Danny, Dunlop and Hi-Tech.

If anyone knows any more, I could do with a laugh.

I thought it was short for "knickers"..but I am not from the UK, so I stand corrected.

Is it cuz I'se black?

Are you sure it was "Nicks", not "Knicks"? Doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the quote, about "being a girl" and "ask me mum" (She's the only one who would know if he was a girl and wore knickers).
Pretty sure it's the latter.

Yeah I assumed it was 'knicks' as in 'knickers'. Makes more sense?

im from england.born in england. raised in merry ol' england. kNICKS is short for "knickers" or as you yanks(non offensively) call them panties or thongs. its implying when charles dance reads the budget that he was a girl once and used to wear knickers. or Knicks for short. LOL- trainers.

I remember Nicks lol. Always presumed he said "knicks" though and that's what the subtitles say. Not that subtitles are ever accurate but that's the best I can do short of finding Cohen/Mylod.

HOMELESSKEV YOUR SPOT ON !! Nicks the trainers was what the speech implied. If Americans didnt get it I understand But if your born in Britain in the 80's and 90's and you thought he was referring to 'knickers (girls underwear) shame on you!
The Joke is not funny in any other context.
Also if you know about Ali G he has a strong emphasis on NAME BRANDS (Fubu, Tommy gear etc) so i dont think 'Nicks' was an abbreviation of Knickers........... he meant NICKS ( the poor NO BRAND trainers).

I never wore nicks but i know what you mean, if you seen a young guy in them and "johnny two stripe" trousers they were considered a tramp.
