The writers screwed up-

I keep seeing everywhere online that Barbra Jean was only 22 in the first season. No way. If so, they should have cast a 22 year old. Mellissa Peterman, with all due respect, never looked 22 in any given time in the series, like they constantly wrote she was in the script.

They said she was 22? When? I only ever heard them say "younger." Melissa Peterman was 30 in the first season. Reba was 46 (which is older than Melissa Peterman is now).

reply

I don't remember them saying she was 22 in the first season. She shows up in flashbacks from about ten years prior, clearly an adult. Maybe they meant she was 22 when she first met Brock and Reba?

reply

I thought Barbra Jean first met Brock/Reba when she began working for Brock, pre-show, right? She still isn't 22 there.

reply

She was at least eighteen than.

Again this goes back to what I have already stated. In reality Mellissa Peterman was not eighteen at any point in the series. Don't get me wrong- I adore Mellissa and thought she portrayed Barbra Jean perfectly but it was inconsistent to constantly refer to her and Brock meeting when she was that young and juvenile.

In an episode from season 5 (2006) Barbara Jean says she was 9 in 1982, which means she was born in 1973, which means in the first season she was 28 (2001). Melissa Peterman was born in 1971, so they only made her character two years younger than she was IRL.
