Why was Gwen dating Richard in the 1st place?

I believe that who you date says a lot about who you are. Therefore, this is my question: If Gwen is such a "great girl," then why is she dating Richard in the 1st place? Since Richard is such a douche, doesn't it reflect poorly on the part of Gwen that she's ddating Richard? Why would Van find her attractive then?

Almost every girl ever in life is into bad boys or dicks. Then suddenly realizes who she should really have a long-term relationship with is a sweet, funny guy. See: the film Just Friends. It may be "just a movie," but it's totally parallel to life.

It's part of the movie and Richard comes from a prestigious family. And anyone would be hard pressed to say they didn't find Gwen attractive.
