There was another connection I felt this movie had to "Titanic." Both female leads had the choice to either spend their life dwelling on their first love or to continue living a vibrant, exotic, fantastic life in which they accomplished their own dreams. It is easy to say that Winnie and Rose should never have "forgotten" Jesse and Jack, that they should never have moved on, married and had children. But that's the whole point...life goes on, and it is your own choice to go with it or try, unsuccessfully, to cling to a moment that is as insubstantial as smoke and only succeed in missing out on a great deal.
I admire the strength and grace both Winnie and Rose possess. It is easy when you are young to live only in the moment and forget all that could lie ahead. It is never easy to let go of a lover, to remember that they are not your entire reason for being; both women did so, and found love again.
I've no doubt, though, that Winnie loved Jesse Tuck up until her last breath. I imagine that, like Rose, Jesse was the one she dreamed about. Jesse was her eternal love. But he was not her life.
