Why would Mae be hanged?

It just seems to me that if you kill someone who is threatening to kill someone else, they wouldn't call it murder. It would be justifiable homicide or something like that. After all, he was holding a gun to the girl's head. She saved the girl's life.

But the Tucks kidnapped Winnie. EVERYONE in town knew the man in the yellow suit was "helping" the Fosters by bringing Winnie back, so they wouldn't have believed a family they thought to be criminals.

Are you asking whether Mae would have died had she been hanged? They cover this in dialog in the movie. No, she wouldn't have, which would have clued the whole town into the fact that they are immortal, causing them much worse problems than simply being seen as criminals.

I kind of wondered about that. Cause there was the scene where Winnie said, "The Tucks were protecting me" and then the man asked her "why did that woman club the man over the head?" and then he said, "it doesn't matter. He's dead and the woman will hang." Winnie could have said something, but I suppose it would be hard to explain without giving away the secret.
