why was she so grossed out that he took off his shirt?

during the part when he was about to go swimming she seemed to be totally grossed out just because he took off his shirt. Why?

reply

I can't tell if you're serious or trolling, but I'll answer anyway.

She wasn't grossed out, she was shocked. She led a very sheltered life and was an upperclass girl raised to be a lady (same reason her mother was horrified to see her playing with the kids on the street--it wasn't proper or lady-like). The movie is set in 1914, a way more conservative time with a whole different set of social rules.

he was going swimming. What did she expect?

reply

Again, she led a very sheltered life and had never even left her town, she hadn't been swimming before. Also, maybe try googling swimwear from the time the movie was set... Men didn't just take off their shirts and strip down to their underwear (and they wouldn't undress in front of her either, they had little shed type things to change in).

reply

as I recall he just took his shirt off, not completely undressed. Also if she never did it before, why did she as I recall remove part of her clothing and jump in with him?

reply

Her removing her blouse would've also been inappropriate as him removing his shirt in front of her.

reply

In 1914 removing your clothes or wearing underwear in front of the opposite sex was inappropriate.
