The weight of a chair. (Spoiler)

Really, it seemed unlikely that the office chair would be so heavy that Ben would not have been able to lift it up to the surface of the pool with Amy tied to it. Even the heaviest things are suprisingly light in water, and we're not talking about concrete blocks here, it's a CHAIR for crying out loud! Even with her weight on it he could have easily pulled her right up. I think it's something like every ten pounds feels like one underwater. So even five hundred pounds total (which I'm sure the total weight wasn't even close to!) would have been as easy to pull upward as fifty.

I know, suspension of disbelief for plot purposes, but really, for anyone who's spent ample time in a pool as I have, including exercises that include heavy weights, that's just pushing it a little too far for unbelievability. When I saw him try to pull her up and seeing that the chair was apparently far too heavy and weighted down, all I could think was "oh give me a break!"

reply

That is just what I was thinking, push up the damn chair, move to the other side of the poo away from Madison and untie her there

Chandler: You got a manny!?

reply

Untie her? Madison had her cuffed.

reply

Agreed, especially if he was such an experienced swimmer. He would be even more apt to lift a person and chair out of the water, because his body would be stronger than average

reply

I don't know...a single water brick could be pretty heavy to pull out, and he was probably panicking at the time, so he couldn't think straight. AND damn Madison kept hitting everything with that stick so it was a distraction.

reply

Yeah two good ways to see it. He was most likely panicking and at the time his life was so messed up that his mind was not all straight. He was scared out of his mind with this girl in his life that was getting away with EVERYTHING! as an audience we had a lot more time to think about what could we do in his place. Obviously i would have told that crazy girl that i do love her and try to cool her down a bit, you know? lie to her and make her think that she's important and trick her into comming to me so that i could save Amy. I mean the police all ready has enouch to get her butt in jail, so it would only be less than a few before the cops get there and arrest her. Yet he goes all stupid and tells her no and causes her to push Amy to the pool. So he swims to her and can't push her up, also it seemed kind of stupid that he was still carring that thing that Madison gave him. It's like you hate this chick that is destroying your life yet you dont forget to carry things thing around? yeah i'm sure the director or writters thought this would be interesting to show but it was nothing but a cheap idea. also Madison was hitting the water a lot of times and yet she didnt manage to hit him? I dont know this movie was a bit too badly done if you ask me.

reply

No he wouldn't have. I highly doubt he would have been able to lift that, as it would have been heavy, with an object on the chair and he was out of breath by the time he got to the other end of the pool.

reply

Or maybe the reason why he can't lift the chair up out of the water easily is because if he could, all the tension in the scene would be non-existant.

reply

The chair was obvisouly made of some sort of material that made it sink to the bottom (Hence the reason the chair sank to the bottom, rather than floating on top). Once Sherri and the chair hit the bottom of the pool, there was no way that they would be returning to the surface again with all that water pressure on them.

reply

True. A person, no matter how heavy, is very light in water.

"I think it's something like every ten pounds feels like one underwater."

-Actually I think it doesn't even feel that much. When I was a kid, I used to play with my aunt in a lake and liked to carry her around for fun. She weighs about 200 lbs or a little more, but she weighed about 5-10 pounds in water (head stayed above water and head weighs about 4-5 pounds).
But anyway, in this case lifting a person up from the bottom of a pool is difficult if the pool is deep so that you can't stand on the bottom.
