Released in 2002 But...

Feels so much like a holdover thriller from the 1990s. Even down to the college-rock song played at the end.

'When there's no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.'

^ so true it reminds me in terms of style like Disturbing Behaviour from 1998.

reply

Very true! Don't forget though that these "styles" were incredibly lucrative and the entire teen genre sort of held over until about 2007 when Superbad trailblazed the Apatow influence for younger audiences. I'd say She's The Man ended the 90s.

reply

Yeah, its like it was filmed in 1998 and didn't release until 2002. It has that whole 90's look and feel.

reply

2002 was only a few years after the late 90s

reply

There's always an overlap from the proceeding year. I'd say a new decade defines itself during it's fourth to sixth year.

reply

It takes a couple of years after each decade ends to really noticeably see the style and tone shift and change. Watch Beverly Hills, 90210 - it was the show that defined the 90s, running from 1990-2000, but if you didn't know that, you would swear the first two seasons were the 80s. Friends is the same way - it ended in 2004, but up through 2002, it has a 90s vibe. Give it another year or two and movies that came out in 2012 will start seeming a bit more dated than they actually are.

Yeah.

This is certainly part of the film's overall charm and for me adds to the nostalgia factor of seeing this theatrically at eleven years old.
