Body armor comes in a number of levels:1, 2a, 2 and 3a being the most common.
What armor will or will not stop is a combo of the round used, type of projectile and length of the barrel used to fire it. But 2a and up are rated to stop 9mm. The 2a and up are all rated to stop 12 guage 00 buckshot. Almost nobody sells level 1 vests and fewer people actually buy them.
