I think he went to try and take those guys into custody, since he figured out that Van Meter was setting him up for an ambush. He also wanted to know why Van Meter wanted him to get ambushed since he had served him so loyally. So i think he must have had a gut feeling that Van Meter was in some way connected to the store killing case and he wanted to get to the bottom of it.
