Music during the robbery/killing

I enjoyed this movie. Russell turned in a good performance as did the rookie kid. One thing that was off was the music during the liquor store robbery. It clearly didn't fit the drama or and amount of violence that was taking place, it was too upbeat and "happy". A darker understated melody or even just a constant beat to bring in the tension would have been much better. Was it just me or did anyone else notice this?

Just You!

yea me too. I liked the movie but it had one of the worst scores ever

that plus the scene where he's driving around during the riots to generic soap opera music were terrible

plus they try to make Sidwell and Orchard into half-assed comic relief, but it's stupid because they're killing everybody in the whole entire movie

"whole entire movie".........that's redundancy. Whole means entire so entire isn't neccessary!
You're welcome!!!!

The music used in the scene was perfect. This is true because for the robbers their was no tension. They were very familiar with armed robbery and murder. If the scene had been done with an "understated melody or even just a constant beat," the robbers would have needed to be amateurs. The upbeat music that was in the scene was a tool used by the director to show the audience that robbery was a very routine activity for Orchard and Stilwell.

I agree completely. It wasn't a tense moment for them, just business as usual.

U kidding? How can you not go wrong on a rob scene with some Eazy-E playing?

Meh.

Exactly the song was called Neighborhood Sniper by Eazy-E, which was made in 1992 after the Rodney King incident. In the beginning of the song you hear King getting shot by Eazy.

This is a good movie. Good enough to watch twice. (I just watched it for a second time.) Maybe I'll watch it again some day. I really like it and think it's a fine picture.

However, the music is wretched. After the riots begin, and Perry is shooting it out with Orchard and Sidwell as they're trying to escape, it sounds like a bad '80s cop show. That sequence is filled with tension and terror, but the music completely undercuts it with guitar wailing. Afterward, there's a reflective moment with his partner who Orchard and Sidwell just killed, but it's accompanied by a syrupy piano melody whose awfulness is compounded by a cheesy saxophone solo that kicks in when Perry stands up and walks to his car.

There are many unobtrusive moody moments in the incidental music that aren't bad. If the entire score had been like that it would have been much better. This is a strong movie with fine performances. Its over-the-top musical moments weaken it slightly, however.
