James Elroy and others paint a pretty nasty picture of LAPD

Is there any truth to this? Still today? Pretty grim, cops as death squads? As executioners? I know it is just a movie but it makes you think. These themes of Bad LA cops seems pervasive!

It ain't just LA, dood. All cops are killers and perjurers and corrupt. This was a good show except for the ending.

There a dirty cops in every big department, though not every cop as the above poster suggests.

I'm not an actor. I just play one on TV.

The unit that they portrayed in the movie was the LAPD Special Investigation Section (SIS). The real SIS is a small squad of detectives within the Robbery Homicide Division that serves as the LAPD's intelligence unit, running surveillance on and shadowing suspected criminals. They go after professional thieves, robbers, burglars, kidnappers, and stuff like that and handle surveillance for other investigations on request. They have a pretty fearsome reputation in LA for getting involved in shootings, mostly because they are already following armed suspects and then move in, getting the drop on them, and often getting into gunfights.

They've been called a death squad before, and have faced a lot of controversy because they have a tendency of getting into a large number of gunfights and killing a lot of suspects. They used to have a policy of waiting until their suspects committed a crime, and then ambushing them outside the location, in their vehicle, which tended to lead to a lot of shootings, and also left victims stuck in a takeover robbery scene sometimes for hours at gunpoint. Most of the people that they're going after are some of the worst and most dangerous criminals in LA, however, which is probably the biggest reason that they are involved in a lot of shootings. The city has settled a number of lawsuits over the years with victims and survivors, but there's never been a case with them that I know of where the shooting wasn't ruled justifiable.

The LAPD has had major scandals though in some units, like the notorious Rampart CRASH, that were even worse than the stuff showed in this movie. Think Training Day. The Rampart CRASH cops were doing major frame-ups, stealing drugs, getting into gunfights with other cops, and serving as muscle for gangs (some of them worked security for Suge Knight and Death Row records back when, one of them is in federal prison and is a validated member of the Bloods). There's been other stuff. It's not as much as it used to be, but the LAPD was always, since the 1950s, just a pretty hard-core, in your face, head cracking kind of department.

Tommy: I remember this unit on '60 Minutes' YEARS ago...To give you an idea of the 'Slant' of the show, they actually interviewed the Dirtbag girlfriend of one of the crimos who was killed by this LAPD Unit; she assisted her scumbag boyfriend and a couple of other perps in a violent takeover robbery of a hair salon...they beat and terrorized the employees & customers (who also got interviewed) & when they came out they were bushwacked & 'riddled'; needless to say "60 Minutes" prominently featured the fact that both vics AND this scumbag BOTH had lawsuites pending against the LAPD...
speaking of which...wasn't there a Movie starring Lou Diamond Phillips and Scott Glenn that was based on this unit? Turns out it was hard to charge many of the officers because LOTS of them were killed in the Line of Duty with this unit.

Yeah, letting the crack-heads & scum roam around LA without any law enforcement is SOOO much better...why it would be a regular paradise like Sierra Leone or Zimbabwe...

LAPD has shot and killed many innocent people! My co-workers dad was one of them. He was a little old man shot in cold blood while laying on his stomach following police orders after they raided his house mistakenly. They sued LAPD for a million dollars. I've also met other people shot in mistaken identity, execution style. Fortunately LAPD has gotten better and crime is not as bad as it was in the 90's, especially gang-related homocides. Lived in LA for almost 20 years so I witnessed many things including the riots.

Well, it takes a tough police department in a tough neighborhood, what did you expect. Better that then gangs running all over the place like Somalia, I guess.

I wouldn't take it too seriously. The guy who wrote it does films like this all the time. Just look at Training Day and Harsh Times
