Has the Director's Cut ever been released?

No, it was suppose to have been released in 2005. Maybe sometime during 2011-2015 Civil War 150th Anniversary it will be put out. I'm interested to see how big of a difference it will make similar to the 'Kingdom of Heaven' Director's cut.

There are nearly two and a half hours missing from the final cut that would have been part of the director's cut. This includes the entire battle of Antietam and sequences with John Wilkes Booth and Abraham Lincoln, not to mention other scenes here and there. If it ever gets released, I have no doubt it will blow people's minds and be THE best Civil War film ever made. I only hope Maxwell will release it, even with the monumental box office failure it was.

Then again, no one was crazy for Kingdom of Heaven, but it opened eyes when Ridley Scott released the DC.

You aren't seriously comparing Ron Maxwell to Ridley Scott, are you?

There is a man...he travels fast...he has purpose...he brings violence and destruction.

We can only hope so. The movie is brilliant as is, but would be invaluable to fans everywhere.

Here's something I found verrrrrry interesting.

That's the first step. Now we just gotta get a few more of those to happen at quicker intervals and it'll be well on its way to Best Buy shelves.

How do you like that piece of satire?

Interesting. Thanks for posting.

It would have made more sense for the film to have been released in two parts instead of trying to cram it into one film.

Harmonica: An ancient race.

I would so buy this. I really hope it happens soon. According to Wikipedia, during a speech at the WV Book Festival, Civil War historian James Robertson said that the he had spoken to Maxwell and that the 6 and a half hour directors cut would be released on video during the first quarter of 2011.

Let's hope it happens!

That would be good. I hope it happens.

The Directors Cut will be released sometime in 2011. That's what James Robertson told me; He and Maxwell will this month begin filming commentary for the DVD when it is released. This seems like its finally going to happen as he specifically mentioned Warner Bros. PLANS on releasing it.

I really hope this is true. :-( I was thinking of rewatching this film soon, but I may wait so that wait it will be fresh when and if the director's cut comes out. Although I may watch the Fredericksburg scenes next December.

Terrific news! I cannot wait!

I also wonder if that means the director's cut will be unrated or Rated R, because I remember reading that Maxwell had to edit the battle scenes to get it down to a PG-13 rating, and they were still pretty intense.

I definitely will buy a director's cut version of G&G.

reply

That's kind of an odd thought, the full version of Gods and Generals being Unrated or Rated R, and then the sequel, Gettysburg, is PG.

But yeah, since Antietam was the battle that changed the meaning of the war, and was known for being the bloodiest single-day battle, it would make sense that the violence/gore in those scenes is indeed of "R" dimensions.

Heads and limbs are blown off during Antietam in the original script.
