Director's Cut = ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!

Just came back from going to the exclusive Director's Cut premiere last night as well as the re-enactment this morning!

Ron Maxwell talked the talk about his extended version.... and the product definitely walked the walk!

The Antietam sequence was about 10-12 minutes and was *beep* awesome!!! The extended boot camp sequence for the 20th Maine was great, I almost came up out of my seat during the part where Adelbert Ames tests Tom Chamberlain on the steps of loading a musket, it was so electrifying. There's extended camp life scenes, mostly in Stonewall's brigade, the "no photographs" scene was amusing and drew a great laugh. Some more re-inserted stuff I recognized from the novel, and the Booth subplot was both intriguing and appropriately haunting.

As Greg [Ciannao?] posted on his blog, the scene of Jackson praying prior to First Manassas was removed, and it was a great decision by Maxwell to take it out because, as somebody else posted, "the audience doesn't have to pick itself up from hearing Jackson praying". Though I, too, was disappointed that the "Book of Esther" part was removed because I thought it was very touching scene. The whole scene itself is still in place, they just cut right from Martha giving the dying officer a drink to telling Hancock about the Beales.

Plus, a handful of actors within the film were present for the discussion and handed out autographs onto box sets of the new blu-ray and dvd packs, so talking to them was real pleasure! Great experience!!!

How do you like that piece of satire?

In the commentary track on the Blu-ray, Maxwell said that bit with Chamberlain and Fanny meeting Booth was a bit of poetic license. Chamberlain and his wife were in Washington at that time, and Booth was in a performance of "Julius Caesar" in the Capital as well. But no, the Chamberlains did not go to the theater and see (much less talk) to Booth. Still, it is a good "what-if" scene, and the line that Booth speaks about the audience deciding who is hero, and who is villain is brilliantly done!

God bless!

Remember, Michael Shaara took some poetic license as well when he decided to have Chamberlain and the 20th Maine transferred "right smack dab in the center". But I also loved that exchange with Booth, that was a great line indeed!

Wow, I think I took a picture with you! I was the guy with the Buster Kilrain T-Shirt!

I didn't make it to the screening. Remember that I told you back in December that you're lucky to be living in the area?

By the way, which sutler do you patronize? I may be in the market for a good quality forage cap.

I'm not in any unit, but I would like to upgrade my farby bummer cap to a better one.

I've heard of Dirty Billy's. Their stuff is expensive, but seems to be of very good quality. C&D Jarnagin looks a little cheaper.

Thanks for the info.

I was unaware they actually cut stuff in the Director's Cut. So a lot of the heat the film took (mainly the incessant praying and lengthy exposition) has been trimmed?
