Question about the book.

I began reading it today and in the section where Lee goes to Harper's Ferry, J.E.B. Stuart mentions he has an invention that would attach a sword to a rifle. At first I thought it might be referring to a bayonet, but that doesn't make sense because we were using bayonets in the Revolutionary war.

Does anyone know what this is referring to? Or is it just a bit of dialogue that I should slough off?

IIRC, it has to do with the sword and its sheath connecting to the belt or something to that effect, but denfinitely not a bayonet.
