People were different then.

They spoke in coherent sentences, almost as if they were literate and influenced by what they read. And they acted on civilized motives, wise or unwise. And they valued things like valor and femininity, and Jesus. And they dressed as well as they could under the circumstances.

It's all very unlike the real world. Where are the wiggers and "celebrities" with piercings, tattoos and drug habits, pledging to serve Mr. President for policies like "Hope!" and "Change!"?

News Flash: People acted differently during the period of the Civil War compared to the present time!

People also chained up a race of people for only being that race... whipped them into submission... whipped them into doing their chores, labors... creating an air of animosity for generations to cone...

Yeah, totally awesome, bro.

Also, they did all that in the name of Jesus. -_-

Slavery of course isn't cool; but not every slave was beaten and whipped either. Generalizations either way are incorrect.

So they valued my gardener more than their slaves? That's interesting.

There must have been some awful circumstances back then since many people could not afford to buy a second set of clothes and what they wore was often threadbare and worn out.

Of course, when talking about the affluent, rich class of people, then it's something different indeed. From the labor of slaves and underpaid workers they were able to buy all they needed for every social occasion imaginable.

You might as well blame the present day homeless for not dressing well. What a horrid lack of social grace indeed. A different class of people altogether.

Nah, you're looking at it through rose-colored lenses. Much more people were illiterate then, especially in the South, so that alone nullifies any sense of that age being "better" than now.

After all... tomorrow is another day.
