harry goz (murphy)

did they ever dedicate an episode to him? and I don't just mean in the episode "Legacy of Laughter," when they showed murphy's likeness and had everyone applauding.

Its hard to say because the credits went by so fast, but when he did pass on Adult Swim dedicated all that nights shows to him and his memory.

In the last episode they kind of dedicated the whole series to him by having a sort of "in memory" clip.

The first DVD was dedicated to him, and featured a tribute to him by members of the cast and crew.

is it just me, or did the tribute to cpt. murphy choke you up? i thought it was touching. matter of fact, the entire legacy of laughter was very sad. especially when it ended fifteen minutes earlier than i expected with no warning or even any credits. very fitting end to such a wang bang show.

and i think tornado shanks was a very good replacement of captain murphy. he would never fill his shoes, but scenes with him and quin in the "Standing Tall V" were definitly great (get that racist ass flag off of the walking tall!)

The tribute did choke me up, it was really well done while still keeping in the spirit of the show.

And I really liked Shanks. If you think about it, 7030's only choices after Harry Goz passed away were:

A) Shut down the whole show.

This would have sucked for everyone. The loss of one of the main cast shouldn't lose the entire cast and crew their jobs.

2) Try and recast a new Murphy voice, or have a new Captain Murphy-like character to replace Murphy

This would have been disrespectful, and a definite shark-jump. Many shows have done this in the past and it's always mocked by the audience, like the two husbands on "Bewitched." Glad Sealab stayed away from that.

d) Go in a completely different direction and put in a character nothing like Murphy, but still an incompetent captain, and keep Sealab alive and new.

This was the best solution for everyone involved. As they say, the show must go on. And what was wonderful about how Sealab handled it, was the casting of Michael Goz. Not only was he a neat tribute to his dad, but Michael actually did the job well. It's not as though they got someone who sucked just because it was Harry's son, Michael is a fine voice actor and brought Shanks to life wonderfully.

Shanks could never be a "new" Captain Murphy, but he didn't have to be. He made a great new captain of Sealab.
