But the fighters considered to most likely have won it are Guile, Chun-Li or Cammy. All of the other fighters endings could've easily occurred without them actually having defeated M. Bison.
It's always funny to see how people parrot the arguments from the plot guide without ever thinking about them themselves.
Admit it: You only use this whole "Guile's ending is the only one that requires him to defeat Bison, the others could have happened either way" argument because you read it somewhere. You would have never made this connection yourself.
Tell me, how can the following ending happen without Ryu defeating M. Bison:
[Bison and Sagat standing on the winners' podium with place one being empty.]
"As the award ceremony begins, the crowd can be heard whispering: "Where is the champion? Where is Ryu?" Where is Ryu as his admirers chant his name? Already seeking the next challenge, ceremony means nothing to him. The fight is all."
www.vgmuseum.com/end/arcade/a/streetryu.htmwww.vgmuseum.com/end/arcade/b/ssf2tryu.htmHow does this ending
not require Ryu to win the tournament?
Same with Dhalsim: His ending can only happen if he wins the tournament since it also shows him on that podium.
And if Guile's ending requires him to defeat Bison personally, doesn't the same count for T. Hawk?
Anyway you wanna look at it though, it likely wasn't Ryu. It is widely believed that he lost to Ken in the tournament as Ken stated he wouldn't marry his girlfriend Eliza until he won a decisive victory over Ryu, and Ken & Eliza are married after Street Fighter II.
*beep* statement that was made up by the creators of that plot guide. There is
no source whatsoever where it's said that Ken won't marry Eliza unless he has a victory over Ryu. This source
does not exist.
And by the way: Yes, Ryu is the canon winner of "Street Fighter II". If you don't believe me, have a look at my essay:
