Twin Peaks...?

Did anyone find this to be quite similar to twin peaks?

Girl is murdered and an out of town detective is called in to work with the locals.

Boyfriend is having an affair but murdered girl was also having an affair with a 'mystery man'.

Also somebody is framed by planting something in a motorcycle petrol tank, Gun in Insomnia and Drugs in Twin Peaks....

Plus that foggy atmosphere, the small little town surrounded by woods. Yeah I actually thought of Twin Peaks for one second when I watched if for the first time.

They damned well better be. "Twin Peaks" was amazing.

I'll swallow your soul!
Liberals suck...

reply

Yes, the whole girlfriend seeing someone else, but the boyfriend also cheating... the fact it is a small town, and an outside law enforcement is called in. Didn't take me long to draw the connection.

Still, the two are very different beasts in the end.

reply

Yep, I definitely thought of Twin Peaks while watching this movie. Lots of similarities.

Hillary Swank mentions Pacino's former cases, among them Leland-killings or something similar... a nod at Twin Peaks no?

reply

One of the characters is called Eckhart, and there's an Eckhart character in Twin Peaks. Leland might be a nod as well.

I found the opening scene of Alan Wake highly reminiscent of Insomnia's. Both feature a ferry approaching a small city's harbor, and an aeroplane that lands in the water. Alan Wake of course was also heavily based upon Twin Peaks.

reply

I thought the exact same thing regarding Alan Wake. Beautiful opening.

To OP.

No, not at all.

I just thought it was remarkably similar to the ORIGINAL "Insomnia", a Norwegian movie from 1997. This was what you call a REMAKE.

When you remake a movie you don't have to speculate what influences a movie had, unless you're one of those tons of ignorant Nolan fanboys who don't know anything beyond their noses.

Imdb is indeed chocfull of sheep.

reply

The exact same thing needs to be said about Scorsese and The Departed.

Although why isn't it possible that Nolan added in a few Twin Peaks nods during production?

reply

Twin Peaks was all about supernatural chaos and mayhem hiding behind a dull soap opera / quirky murder mystery facade. The absence of supernatural fantasy from Insomnia makes it completely different from Twin Peaks.

reply

I was definitely reminded of Twin Peaks about 15 minutes into the film.

reply

Totally agree with you. I had the same feeling, back in 2002, when I saw it in the theater for the first time.

There can be no doubt on the American, Yet to see the original, but for all we know, the original writer was a Twin Peaks fan. High school girl murdered. Outside investigator, with a shady past(Coopers in getting a girl he loved killed/Pacino's was tampering evidence), a necklace involved, boyfriend seeing the victims friends, Pacific-Northwestern location, while Cooper has dreams that reveal clues/Pacino has insomnia.

That is just what I noticed the first time watching it and I was continually not paying attention because I was talking to my roommate about this similarities because he had just recommended the film, even though I just recommended we watch the first season of Twin Peaks a week before and he hadn't caught any of them.

Twin Peaks+Fargo/Nolan=Insomnia
