Self defense vs murder

I know it's highly argued that what Slim did wasn't technically self defense because she went to HIM.

However, I think people are looking at it wrong...I don't think it was ever meant for us to think she killed him out of self defense. I think it was set up that when Mitch was killed, she could CLAIM self defense due to the abuse, and she would be free to raise Gracie. The only way to stop running and being afraid was to get rid of him. And she needed a credible LEGAL motive.

It was obvious that he didn't even care about his own child, because he hit Gracie as well when he tracked Slim down at the house. Everything he did was motivated by control, not for any genuine love or concern for the child. Typical abuser.
