I didn't quite catch that either. I thought it was just to sleep with them & the husband's buddy is ticked off that he got married & actually had a kid with a "low life." She was "just" a waitress he was supposed to get his fun & move on, I guess.
The con was Robby (the cop) would flirt with a woman Mitch wanted to date, and when he'd successfully 'gotten' the woman's attention, Mitch (conveniently sitting at the next table) would ask the question "How much you settle on?" (naturally a bet to bed the woman) and Robby would respond angrily that the guy should mind his business etc. Mitch then 'scares' the guy off, and the woman (in this case Slim) would think Mitch was this great guy who saved her dignity by speaking up.
Then Mitch, already with a 'sweet man' advantage, flirts and gets a date with his target woman.
What I think is hilarious (besides the fact that no woman Mitch dated figured out what was going on , was that there must have been a LOT of restaurants Robbie could no longer go into!
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus." "Didn't he discover America?" "Penfold, shush."
Mitch and Robbie had a deal going on that Robbie would flirt with a girl and get her attention, then Mitch would pretend to be a stranger sitting nearby who overheard Robbie previously making a bet with his buddies that he'd get the girl into bed. Then Robbie would leave, and Mitch looks like a hero. They also probably did this vice versa - where they switched places, and Robbie would be the hero. Mitch usually just slept with the girls, so Robbie never understood why Mitch actually got serious with her and married her.
lili217 said it best ~ cuz there was a scene where Mitch went to his friend at the police station and the guy made a comment about the situation and said something to the effect 'I just don't see why you decided to marry this one'. Because the con was that they would just mess around with these ladies and not get too involved.
That has to be the LAMEST con game I've ever heard of. What was the writers of the movie thinking? I certainly hope that none of them actually did something like this. Truly pathetic.
It could be pathetic because of the fact this movie used actual real good looking actors to play the roles. But if you look at it from a stand point of reality ~ most likely these guys are not too attractive or just lame at picking up women. So they came up with this game (i.e. con) to lure women into liking them.
Rewatching it I found it interesting that the blonde Mitch ends up with towards the end is expecting him to contact her later and she has to remind him that he doesn't know her number yet. Now if that would have been an average joe ~ the look on her face would have been more disturbed or puzzled.
Not sure if u were posting from my stand point or someone else ~ but reply was sent to me.
Basically he was not well on his way since Slim made it obvious to her friend/coworker that she was not interested in checking either men out. But due to his (quote n quote) game of letting her know his friends game was when he finally was able to make his hit on her.
As I stated in prev post ... I feel that the movie perhaps should have pulled an (Ugly Duckling) move but not having one or any of the characters good looking. Think that is why OP was questioning the whole situation.
Even when she got the rose she still had her defenses up and she may not have dated him. Making her feel vulnerable and "saving" her was what she needed to get her to go out on a limb and talk to him.
