1. Why did he wait 5 years to beat her?
The above poster is right. Mitch didn't seem like the type of psycho that beats his wife just for fun. She challenged his authority in a serious way when she found out about his cheating. Slim had likely been very subservient up until then, not interfering with his secret lifestyle either. When she defied him, he let her know who he thought was boss.
2. Why wouldn't she tell the police? The only excuse she gives is "He's the father of my child! I won't have him in prison!" which is weak tea. A lot of women are like this, unfortunately. Besides being a plot device, Slim seemed like a very needy woman (likely because of her Daddy issues) and wasn't too good at standing up for herself.
3. When she decides to leave, why does she do it in the middle of the night (other than to make a scary scene)? The guy goes to work every day. Wait until he leaves, go pick up the kid, and flee. I think she did this because she knew Mitch had someone watching her during the day. Remember how he mentions to her about her running to the diner? He knew because he hired people to watch her.
I guess she figured no one was watching when Mitch was there to watch her. It was kind of silly the way she went about it though. I would have dissolved sleeping pills in his dinner wine or nighttime water. Or tricked him into the basement and locked the door behind me.
4. When she gets beat up because the dumb night escape fails, why does her husband have a gun with a silencer (other than to make a scary scene but not provide a reason for the cops to respond)? I think that is the answer: So the cops would not be alerted. He wouldn't want negative attention for himself at that point.
5. At this point, why don't they call the cops? There are three witnesses to a man beating his wife unconscious, firing a gun near a child, and threatening the life of a witness. She was stupid, partly, and she also probably figured that he'd find a way to convince the cops she was an unfit mother.
6. How did the kid sleep through her mom being beaten to a pulp? I laughed at that scene too, I admit. I guess she was a sound sleeper. She seemed that way for most of the second attack on Slim in the rental house too, but at least she finally woke up there.
7. How does this crazy guy have squads of hitmen who can impersonate FBI agents and appear anywhere in the world? Money, I suspect. And a corrupt cop friend who helps out.
8. How does someone afford a nice house like that, two cars, a wardrobe, etc on just a wad of $50s in an envelope? I assume he gave her more money later. The letter says "If you need more, leave word at my office." But that house was preposterous, I agree. If you know (as Slim seemed to know) that you're not staying long, why not rent an apartment? I think the rental house was an homage to a similar film: "Sleeping With the Enemy". The character there rents a house that's 5 times bigger than she needs too.
9. How does someone learn Krav Maga (that's what the FAQ says it is, but it appears to be the 'slap him until he knocks you down, then make him trip' school of defense) in 30 days? Theoretically, I've read its possible. If she trained 6-8 hours a day every day, I imagine she could do it. I can't imagine any trainer wanting to do this though haha.
10. Not really a question, but did anyone else find the scenes of JLo peeking out from her hiding spot really funny? You mean in the heating vent? Not really, but I did laugh at the fact that one SECOND after the door closes on the goons Gracie yells...and they don't hear it!
11. What use is an alarm if it doesn't sound when someone opens a door, and doesn't sound when people move around in your house while you're away?
You mean Mitch's alarm? It was set for intruders from outside, not inside. Some alarms trip at any movement or door opening, some do not.
12. JLo has rings on her fingers (but she's still Jenny from the block) and tape on her hands and supposedly learned how to fight. Yet she punches the guy three times in the face, leaving no marks or bleeding. When she first hits Mitch, she slaps him open handed, not closed-fisted.
13. Did the end fight really need to go exactly how the guru predicted? He'll grab you around the neck! He'll hit you with a lamp, and you'll twist in midair to land in the perfect position for a kick! At which point he'll inexplicably put down his weapon and try to stomp on your stomach, although in the past he has always kicked you in the side! Etc, etc. I agree. Plot devices, I guess.
I found it unbelievable that she escaped with so few injuries! And why oh why did she wipe the blood off herself before the cops arrived?? Wouldn't that add to her story's credibility?
14. The cops show up at the end and look all over the crime scene ... gee, maybe it was a dumb idea to CUT THE PHONE WIRE?! That seemed ridiculous of her, I agree. I guess she could argue that HE cut the wire, but what about the call to Ginny that Slim makes? She could have called the cops then, but then maybe she could say she wasn't in danger just then.
15. Finally ... did the safe wimpy guy from Seattle die? The husband says something about fishing his guts out of Puget Sound, and how they'll never find the body ... and we never see him again. No he didn't. We see him alive at the end of the film. Slim and Gracie are with him on a boat during the closing credits.
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."
