I believe because she knew Mitch was having her followed. Remember he knew she went to her old work place. (Did you have to go crying to the greasy spoon) Mitch mentioned. I assume he knew her being there.. So she left at night because Mitch wouldn't have men watching her at night because he would be there..(I guess??)

If she broke in when he wasn't home, she would have set off the alarm. When he's home, even when he's asleep he doesn't set the alarm. He sets the alarm when he leaves the house, but she's already inside.

I agree ... but wondering why ur not answering question. I feel it was meant to give drama to movie. But in real life ~ perhaps she was worried he was keeping a track on em (i.e. situation at School) so she knew he would see her every move.
