So Did Joe Die?

The night after Joe spends the night in San Francisco we find Mitch talking about finding his body in the Washington river. Joe is never seen again after this so did they actually kill him?

No.... at the end of the movie when Slim and Gracie are reunited at the airport they talk about where to go now and they both want to go to the "Emerald City". That is where Joe lives.

Also as the credits roll, we see Slim, Gracie, and Joe on a boat together. Joe is holding Gracie so I'm guessing they all lived happily ever after.

First of all it was in Michigan not San Francisco when Joe stayed with them. Secondly, yes Joe is seen on boat with them at end but my fear is that is it a flashback scene? Or was that legit after Slim killed Mitch?
