Orlando doesn't die.
Joe Byrne dies.

As it was mentioned before, I got the impression that he got up to get a drink because he was resigned to the fact that he would die and didn't really care anymore.
*Teena or Bucko or Buck-lo, if you please ..lol
it was like this guys, the kelly gang had killed people, starved, seen others die, and were constantly fleeing and attacking police all in the name if justice, therefore they were really not in their right mind. When they were stuck in the inn, i'd say that it was just too much for Joe Bryne, and he was probably halucinating from malnutrition and whisky, as well as the fact that he kind of knew that it was all coming to an end, so he decided he needed a drink, and didn't really fully comprehend that he could get shot.
how did you get a black eye? ... i got attacked by a fridge
The character that he portrays is shot after getting up to have one last drink. Someone shoots the drink, then himself. The height of rudeness, really. You'd think they'd let a man have a last drink before they killed him, for goodness sake.

the movie's climax is "the big showdown" the kelly gang vs. the police, that's when joe takes it. I read somewhere an alleged true account of his death, in which he does indeed go for a drink but couldn't throw his head back enough to take it all down with his armour being so heavy. So he lifts up with groin apron while knocking it back and that's when he happens to get a bullet in the groin. The police then dragged his body out before the building went up in flames. Of course some of that could be apocryphal, i'm not sure, but its interesting
share"The police then dragged his body out before the building went up in flames."
A Priest (Father Matthew Gibney) ran into the hotel and dragged Joe's body out from the Hotel. Not those bastardly police.
As far as lifting up his groin apron, I don't think so. He did obviously lift his helmet to take a swig of the drink. Just a 'lucky' bullet (so to speak).
He probably would have survived had he not gotten up to have a drink.

Its known for a fact that Joe Byrnes body was pulled out before Glenrowan Inn went up in flames, although his fingers were singed. The police then hung his body out the front of the police station, they even took photos of it...really sad...i know but you can check the photo on:

Spoiler?
this is akin to watching president kennedy on the motorcade and saying don't tell me what happens next.
Here's another spoiler - Ned also dies.
I wanted to kill him for getting up to get a friggin drink during an all-out fight.
shareI dont know how the real Joe Byrne died, but I do know that Orlando was suprisingly good in the movie, hi didn't over act, and he was better then Heath Ledger in this one, I guess hes better when hes not the center of attention of the movie.

The detail of Joe Byrne's death is sketchy. bear in mind- this was a gun battle, and the kelly boys were good shots. The police were not too keen to stick their beaks in the door/window to record events for prosperity.
The actual events, dialogue and movements within the inn during the last moments are unknown to most Kelly historians. Including the deaths of Dan and Steve. It was often thought they had poisoned themselves, but then the likelihood of poison being 'readily available' at such a moment, and in an inn was also unlikely (and also time consuming).
Officially, the bodies were charred beyond recognition, and no autopsy performed.
yea he dies finally a movie where he dies in
shareYes, and in a tremendously well-done, incredibly ironic way.
Yay Olympics!!
