does anyone know what the budget was for this film?

That's in Aussie dollars, though. The budget was US$18 mil, which at the time the film was made came to roughly AUS$30-35 mil. So it really wasn't that expensive for the type of film it is, when you compare it with the average US budget (which I think is US$50-60 mil these days).
