He.......

was a thieving murdering bogtrotter who tried to take on the mighty British Empire and was hung from the gallows, as he rightly deserved.

pardon?

that might be your opinion. Here's mine: the police that were arresting his family and friends were as corrupt as anything and the ones that he shot could have killed him.

WHat would have you done in the circumstances?

The difference is, he was a criminal and now every one wants to make him out to be a later day Robin Hood and not the murdering bastard he really was...

From reading history, I get the impression that Ned Kelly was far from being a saint. The police at the time seemed pretty dogdy too. I don't consider Kelly a hero, more a victim of circumstances who, in my opinion, did not deal with those circumstances all that wisely. It's easy for us to be his judge 127 years down the track, with no real understanding of the Victorian police's motives...and "the mighty British Empire" committed it's fair share of sins as well.

When the police want to do something, let them. They have the authority and as such they know what is right and proper. That is why they have the guns and most populations get disarmed; I mean, what government in there right minds would want a population that could defend themselves from said government. That would be some sort of insanity, wouldn't it?
