Funny...

When I saw the extra features for Ned Kelly on the DVD, I was suprised that the speaker said Ned Kelly is a world famous legend. I'd never heard of him before, neither had my friends.
Maby we're just not well-informed in Denmark, but I think it is common to overrate national legends/heroes/writers/you-name-it.
In Denmark we think high thougts of Hans Cristian Andersen, H. C. Ørsted, Tycho Brahe and Johannes V. Jensen (among others)
But how much do you know about them (if you have heard the names)?

I'm from Australia, and the only one on your list that I am familiar with is Hans Cristian Andersen. :) I expect that he'd be well-known globally.

I'm not surprised that you hadn't heard of Ned Kelly... this is the first time I've heard him described as "world famous." He's obviously very famous here in Oz, but I guess that the U.K. would be the only other place I'd expect anyone to have heard of him (and I have no idea how widely known he'd be there).

I have to admit that I did not hear about Ned Kelly before I saw this movie. But then again: I had not heard of Stephen Glass before I saw the movie Shattered Glass, and there was a huge story about him two years ago. All over the news (his story was in 1998, I believe). I saw this movie and it quickly became my favorite. We had an evacuee essay to write in English, I chose to write mine on the Kelly gang. When we had to edit each other's in class, I had two or three people tell me it was one of the most interesting stories they'd ever read. They asked me if I fabricated any of it, and I gave them my cites. The truth is, Ned Kelly really is a world-famous legend. It's just that this generation isn't familiar with him.

Sad, isn't it?
