Ned Kelly was a ruthless cop killer, yet the only thing missing in this film is a halo above his head. It reminded me a lot of the Tyrone Power version of Jesse James, except it was the wicked police instead of the railroad that "made him do it." It also played the Irish Catholic victimisation card despite the fact the policemen he killed were also Irish Catholics.
Cops should never get a free pass just because they're cops. Ever. Yet so many in history and even today act as if it's a job entitlement. Remember, there are three sides to every story; yours, theirs, and the truth.
I'll go so far as to say that anyone who at least hasn't read the Jerilderie letter should probably refrain from commenting, or at the very least not leap to vilifying and condemnation of Ned Kelly. Certainly anyone who has ever had even a slight run-in or exchange of words with a cop who is in possession of a bad attitude would at least empathize with events like this in history.
Cops should first and formost be role models, held to a higher standard than the average. And above all they should not possess the notion that they are above the law or have a special set of rules only for them. Yet sadily, all too often throughout history they are anything but role models.
My grandfather was a cop. One of the greatest men I ever knew, btw. Had the cops that Ned Kelly had to deal with been of that level of character I have zero doubt they'd have lived longer than they did.

The opinions you noted in your post are absolutely on the mark. I hate it when one group of folks think they are above others and expect favored treatment. It is even worse when such groups abuse those they consider beneath them.
