full retard blah blah Oscar blah blah... blah?

To *slightly* go in a different direction, do we really care about the Oscars anymore? I imagine they were started to give honors to the people who made the film, and also to let the masses know which films were good or respectable. That was before the Internet. Who cares what a bunch of prissy judges decide?
I'm not trying to take away from the CEREMONY, but I wonder if the Oscars are all that INFLUENTIAL. A big event and fun, yes/maybe, but influential... it feels like nowadays, when a movie's "good" it has buzz about it. And it feels like the Oscars are more of an afterthought. But I am no Oscar historian, so if anyone is, I'd love to hear you talk about it.

Sean Penn played a convincing retard. I really hated the movie though.

"I thought the cold war was over!"

"It's always cold in Siberia..."

I haven't seen I Am Sam, I'm only here because I just saw Tropic Thunder lol.

Everyone says that they don't care about the Oscars, but people do. An Oscar (at least in one of the big categories) is still a prestigious award that translates into a bigger audience. Those extra tickets are bought because of the Oscars, so yeah, they're still influential.

You might like this article by Slate that argues that the Golden Globes have a better track record for picking movies and actors that stand the test of time (and that are actually entertaining). The highlight for me:
"Spend some time with the list of Golden Globes winners for best musical or comedy—a list which includes The Apartment, The Graduate, M.A.S.H., Tootsie, Prizzi’s Honor, Hannah and Her Sisters, Working Girl, The Player, Toy Story 2, Almost Famous, Sideways, Vicky Christina Barcelona, Lost in Translation—and it reads suspiciously like the list of films we will actually be watching in 50 years’ time, once Crash is but a distant blip in our rear view mirrors."

I actually tried to watch I am Sam after seeing Tropic Thunder...

just to see if lived up to it's rating...

and I just found the movie boring and I totally understood what he meant by going "full retard"...that's just my opinion, I'm sure tons of people loved it.

Leonardo DiCaprio's depiction of Arnie in Who's Eating Gilbert Grape was phenomenal......Playing a young retarded child. Even though he had a disability, his personality shined through and I felt like I could sympathize and understand what it must be like for those who have loved ones with a similar condition.
