I Am Sam is easily a 9. 8.5 at the very least. I gave it a 10. I don't expect everyone to give it a 10 but a 7.4 kinda has me questioning the reasons for people to not like this movie. And I find myself at a loss. I'm one of those guys who takes pride on liking and watching "smart" movies and usually doesn't care much about those emotional dramas. But I couldn't help but feel that this movie is so much more than the Mulholland Drives and the Inceptions and the Fountains and stuff. I may be on the side of the angels. But do not think for a second that I am one of them.
I gave it an 8. This was probably the BEST performance I've seen from Sean Penn. And this is where Dakota Fanning won my heart for being such an excellent and wonderful actress. Not a CHILD actress, but an ACTRESS, period.
You know, when I think about it, her performance very likely motivated the rest of the cast to bring their "A" game, or they were going to get lost in the shuffle.
Pheiffer (sp?), is what lost the last couple of points with me. The character was well written, certainly. However, at times it seems that you saw more of her than that of her character on the screen.
I actually think Michelle Pfeifer was the biggest bright spot in the movie. While Dakota and Sean were great - Pfeifer was gloriously beautiful in every shot, gloriously human, so highly strung at the start and then growing into a caring angel.
Don't get me wrong, she's a wonderful actress. What threw me is at times I felt we were watching her deal with some of her own demons, as it were, in front of the camera.
Unfortunately the individual I watched this with kept harping on it until it became a sore spot; instead of what could have been a brilliant moment, or series of moments.
