in one of the court scenes, when annie is on the stand, the other lawyer brings up her father, and she gets upset. do we ever find out what she was so upset about? what did her father do?

sam says her father was a mean guy, i think what he was saying is that her father was abusive to her and her mother

Yeah, i took it as he was abusive too, although, we dont know in what way he was.

I don't know much about family court, but it made me wonder if it was SOP to attack the upbringing of a character witness. Would that really happen?

I'm also guessing that her father was abusive. First of all because Sam says in court that he was a "meanie", but especially when Michelle's character is reaching for the door handle where Annie's sitting, when they are sitting in the car, and she gets too close or something, and Annie shouts "NO!" and pulls away. So I'm guessing that her father touched her in places and in ways that a father shouldn't.

Sam said that Annie's father was a mean father/husband to her and her mother. When Annie get upset, she scream and doesn't like to be touch at all. That implies that Annie's father was a physical or sexual abusive father who is like to touch her inappropriately in public places that he shouldn't be doing that to his daughter or his wife.
