Pro Bono

That was the most pleasing aspect of the film, where this rich lawyer decides do go "Pro Bono" for a change and to prove to her co-workers that she can do it. A decision that really helped Sam out during the court battle to get his daughter back.

There were a lot of hurdles and obstacles that marred that, but she stuck through right until the end. An excellent lawyer.

She may have been an excellent lawyer but she wasn't an excellent person, and her reasons for taking the case pro bono certainly weren't very honourable.

Yeah, exactly. She took the case pro bono because she was frustrated (even a bit embarrassed) that her colleagues didn't think she'd take such a case. The OP is right that she's a good lawyer, but the way they painted how she took the case is really off.

In fact, had Rita's friends not "heard" of Sam's plight, she'd never have taken it. This was a woman that wasn't even going to give Sam a proper referral when she declined to take his case. That's a big no-no in law to drop a client as she originally did. Him sitting there for the first time--scheduling mixup by a temp or no scheduling mixup--his first meeting established the lawyer/client relationship, and then she attempted to leave him in the lurch without even a referral. (That's actually bad lawyering!)
