Why didn't they (spoilers)...

just kill her?

I just saw the film today and unfortunately I stopped by here first, so I was ready for a big finish, not knowing exactly what that would be, but realized rather quicker once the card was rediscovered.

but what I'm missing is why didn't they just kill her if they wanted to get rid of her and knew she was going to die anyway (or think so)?

Am I missing something?

I know I must be.

I guess they didn't want to get their hands dirty. Something like, it's okay to point the gun, but not to pull the trigger.

reply

Yes. Yes you are missing something from the movie. It's called THE MOVIE. That, and an understanding of humanity and common sense for fictional storytelling.

reply

Because they enslaved her. They wanted Grace to do all the work for her which they had previously denied.
That's why the dog was better than those people. Dog knows better friendship then some people and is loyal to his friend forever, but human wishes, desires and activities depend on certain circumstances and they change all the time. They betray each other and they always do what is better for them like egoists and in case they help you little then they always want something back!

They consider themselves to be morally upright people. They are chillingly devout. To kill her would be evil, but to torture her - to "teach" her - proves they are good.

The town left it up to Tom on how to get rid of her. He decided to go for $$$ and call the big guy.

"I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career..."

reply

Come on, Yolo, that's an easy one! It's because they are good people and law-abiding citizens. Besides, they could get sexual pleasure from her. But it doesn't matter, cause they are human beings. And God knows rape is a far less sizeable sin than murder.

I Sympathise with Lars Von Trier.

reply

Humans crave a scapegoat. They feel it keeps them honest.

Because they were idiots too wrapped up in using her. All the men could have her, so they wouldn't want her dead. Everyone liked the extra help, and it went to their heads. And I wouldn't be surprised that they would have called the number at some point anyway, so they had that in mind. It could also be that they wanted the money, but Tom calls the mobsters instead of the police. They are jus awful people.
