last ep of season 1 how did they get back?

one minute there fighting ww2 and the next they're coming out of a portal in a lab and hugging batman, also was it the same as the world they left or what? i don't see how it could be.

They entered the same portal they exited, returning home.

they where in the 40's they didn't have the time machine to generate the portal.

Remember in the beginning they were told how long it would be before the portal collapsed?

My guess is the portal was open on both sides at the same time so whoever knows about it can go back and forth in time.

So that could be why they were able to go back.
