We'll never get it this good again...

Just watched the opening of Justice League and I am reminded how danged epic the show really was. It's been close to 10 years and nothing has come close. Sure I can see warts in the dialogue and animation and a few opportunities not capitalized on...but I would take those 5 seasons as being as close to perfection as anything that has come before or since.

As much as I love JL, the Batman animated series was even better. That was as close to perfect as you can get. Not actually perfect, no show really is.

reply

Batman was too repetitive. Too much batman...not enough other people. Justice League/JLU had variety, diversity, characters, their enemies, arcs, histories, origins, relationships, etc. etc. etc.

Well Batman is not an ensemble piece of leading characters like the Justice League or The Avengers. There was plenty of diversity in the stories. You can apply everything you said there to BTAS. Enemies, origins, relationships, histories. It's all in BTAS as well.

reply

Batman didn't have enough of those things...and it was centered around batman, of course, thus TOO much bats. It wasn't a bad show...Just saying Justice League was as close to perfection as a superhero show has ever gotten and I don't think we will ever get it like that again.

Complaining that "Batman: The Animated Series" focused too much on Batman is like saying "The Lone Ranger" series focused too much on the Lone Ranger. It's HIS show, where do you think the focus should be?

I agree. Batman Begins also had way too much Batman. Not to mention the entire Dark Knight Saga. I can't believe they focused the whole trilogy on him. Just because it has his name doesn't mean it should be about him.

Christ! you äss-holes I clearly acknowledged that...

[btas] was centered around batman, of course,
<---indicating that I have full acceptance of it's central character. My point, obviously, is that this singular focus did not make it as enjoyable cartoon as Justice League had so much more going for it diverse and powerful cast, compelling story arcs, plots that had enormous scope and players in it. Justice League was the best and most fulfilling/satisfying superhero cartoon ever.

If that's sarcasm it's great.

God I'm rewarching it from start to finish & it will never get this good again.

This is gold, I wish it could've ran longer, but I'm happy that we got something this great even if it couldn't last longer. It ran almost as long as BTAS / TNAoB. 91 episodes compared to 109 I believe.

Its time to play.

reply

That's right. Even Superman's show didn't come close to that with only 54 episodes.

reply

Justice League is amazing. Better than Batman: The Animated series, and here is why:

Justice League had long storylines. 2 or 3 episodes. Batman was to rushed. And this is coming from a huge Batman.

Justice League Unlimited is on the other hand not more then average. I didn't like it that much.

JL Unlimited felt lie an extension of the shown. Like TNBA did for BTAS.

reply

I totally agree. It made no sense.

Like Mr Freeze and Catwoman. They had good endings in BTAS, but came back like nothing happend..

One of the few good things about TNBA was the Dark Knight Returns episode, that was amazing and made me scream out of happiness

reply

What was Catwoman's ending in BTAS?

reply

She quit crime and started to help Batman in some episodes

reply

No she didn't. The only time she helped Batman was when it was in her best interest, too. The last episode she had was Cult of the Cat, where she made off with a fortune in loot from some cat cult she swiped it from.

reply

That's because it's (technically) the same show. After season two ended, the series shifted focus from multi-episode story arcs to individual episode stories and added the 'Unlimited' to the title.

It's kind of like what happened with "Enterprise". It started out as just "Enterprise" because the creators felt that that name was just as recognizable as the Star Trek brand in general but, after low ratings for the second season, they added the 'Star Trek' in front of it in an attempt to boost viewership.

I find this to be the best of the DCAU and one of the DC shows i actually wanted to get when it came out.

I enjoy how the show starts out maintaing big adventures and a good team. It knows to use mythology and continuity when needed, and iMO found the niche better to enjoy rewatching. Something that i don't really feel with a lot of the other DCAU shows. The way CN used to love spamming some shows, it made me realize which ones i really wanted to watch over and over and which ones i could live with not needing to have when i wanted it.

However JLU gets the good and the bad out of it. While it choices to tell a big arc which was good, it also started diverting into the territory i start disliking. While i don't mind reference heavy stuff, i think it still needs to have a good adventure story, which to me a lot of UL feels forced into the arc or just to throw in obscure DC references. While still good, but as good as the first part in Justice League.

However while i think the subject is the most important part, i do feel like this show also evident in the shortcomings of doing too much serialization, replay value is supremely hurt if you don't have JLU in order or if you walk into a part 2. I'm not surprised the DCAU people saved this style for last, given they probably knew this was the end of the cycle.

However the use of serious and serial in most of the new DC productions is highly disappointing. I seem to be more content to watch re-runs of Justice League or Challenge of the Super Friends more than i am new DC productions. But hey to each their own.

I've read a lot of comics and watched a lot of comic based cartoons.
But I have only purchased 2 TV shows in many years.
This series JLA/JLU for the DCAU.

reply

I have to agree with the consensus they don't make cartoons like this anymore. JLU wasn't bad but Justice League was really good, up there with the original Batman cartoon.

reply

I've just been rewatching some Justice League. BTAS is still my favourite, but this show was good.

All for a box of chocolates...

I'd have to say B:TAS definetely takes home the top prize with Young Justice, Batman Beyond and the original Justice League series right behind. Though I like JLU, it wasn't anywhere near the level of the above DC animated shows.

reply

I agree. Every now and then I revisit episodes. I've yet to become so emotionally invested in a series.
