One thing that bothered me about Bats....

And I don't normally read the comics for JLA but Bats is always trying to size himself up against the rest of the JLA because he has no special powers i.e, Strength, flight, transforming into something etc.

I'm just wondering if he's supposed to be like this because I felt it was overkill.

He obviously can't beat a superbeing so why does he try?

reply

Because he sure can try. If we've learned anything, it's that even though he never became an official member and was only a part-time helper, he was considered one and them and they certainly wouldn't want to hurt him or misuse their powers against him unless it's wa real life of death situation. Take J'onn talking to Batman and Batman suddenly standing up and declaring he's taking the Javelin, unless of course "you" (J'onn) instends to stop "me"; J'onn pauses for a second and lowers his head, "No."

Or how he makes it a point to not only know everything's secret identity, but their weaknesses, hence carrying around kryptonite just in case...

You never quite can predict Batman, even the Flash and Wonder Woman (or maybe it was Hawk Girl) are a little creeped out by him. If he needed to, Batman would use their weaknesses agaisnt them, divide, and probably damn near concur all of them.

Typical Batfan.

Because an independent guy like Batman doesn't like the feeling of being the clear weakest link in a team, like he doesn't belong. Who does?

Perhaps he tries too hard to compensate for this sometimes, but after a while he settles down and quickly becomes known as one of the most capable Leaguers despite being a 'normal being'.

Why? Because he's the Goddamn Batman.

Justin explained it. Really good post.

True. In the first episode of Injustice for All after Hawkgirl saves Batman - and the little girl - from the house fire when she says that she's used to being thanked when she's saved someone, Batman just replies that he's not used to being saved - and the conversation ends.

But he can take on the whole JL and win, if given enough time to prepare. That's what's so great about him. He's so much more cunning than the rest of them, that's why he's the tactician of the group. There's not many heroes/villains that can defeat Batman if he is given sufficient prep time.

Here's what's terrible about him: He can only do that because the writers nerf any person in Batman's vicinity. In their own stories MOST heroes are cunning, and WHICH hero hasn't gone up against a technology-using mastermind at some point? But put him in a room with other heroes and suddenly he becomes the only person who can think of something clever. It does a disservice to everyone. The other heroes become idiots, and Batman becomes boringly perfect.
