I was really surprised when I saw the low rating for this movie. I would give it a 7 out of 10, I think. I loved it as soon as I saw it for the first time in 2005 (Gosh, is it really THAT long ago?). In places, the movie is cheesy and predictable. From the beginning, you know that Lucy and Ben are going to get together. To me, this is a feel-good movie that demonstrates the importance of friends, family, making the most of life, chasing your dreams and having no regrets.
When I often watch this movie, it's for a treat or guilty pleasure. An aspect of 'Crossroads' I adore is how the three girls - Mimi, Kit and Lucy - had been the best of friends as kids. After that, they had grown apart - one had become a bit of an outcast, one had got engaged and the other one had been successful academically by studying hard throughout school. Embarking on the road trip was about the three of them rediscovering their friendship. And they did. They all connected again - Mimi had been raped by Dylan (Kit's fiancé; Kit hadn't been aware of this and Mimi later lost the baby), Kit's fiancé was a love-rat (she later broke up with him) and Lucy realised that her mother never wanted her because she was apparently a 'mistake.' They shared their stories and discovered that they couldn't lose each other again.
It's just a bit of harmless fun! I really don't understand the hate! I think this was one of the best movies in that particular era.
