All of the gay & lesbian characters seem to have been at one time in love with someone of the opposite sex (many of whom were ALSO gay/lesbian), which isn't realistic at all. Made me very confused.

Notice that feminine love of a platonic nature is also now verboten in movies? When was the last time two unrelated women were allowed to love each other in a film that didn't involve sex?
The straight answer to your question is yes, as was Virginia Woolf, because all the main characters are based on her.
