shareThat was my guess. Plenty of gay women go that route.
The only other way to get pregnant without meeting the father would be to be drugged and raped, and I don't think that was implied at all.
Thanks Paul...But did you ever think about adoption? Could have been an abandoned baby?
shareMost likely not, because then she would have said, I've never met her "parents" or " biological mother and father." She implies that she is the mother, but because she is a lesbian, she went through sperm donation from an anonymous donor to have a child, which is a common thing.
The other reason she might have mentioned this to Laura Brown is because Laura (and the rest of us) might be wondering if Richard was secretly the father of her daughter. Since they were lovers in the past, and she must have given birth to a child long before she met her girlfriend Sally, it might be possible that Richard got her pregnant while they were sleeping together.

thanks moviesmistress...yup makes sense....well i got it right initially...
shareWell? I may be being hopelessly romantic, but I thought that Julia was Richard's daughter, but Clarissa never told him. We are given no other reason for Clarissa caring for Richard. Oh, sure, I suppose that she was Richard's literary editor, but I felt there was a lot more to their relationship. They were lovers once. As he said, "Oh, Mrs. Dalloway, always giving parties to cover the silence." What silence? (Did he suspect?) Perhaps the answer is in the book Mrs Dalloway. I don't know, but I hope someone who has read the book will comment.

Julia is the daughter of a sperm donator. Just so you know, it's said in the book ;)
Clarissa is caring for Richard because... well, it's not really so easy to explain... they were lovers in their early twenties or something and Clarissa loved him, and apparently still does, so I guess that's why.
Clarissa is like THE PERSON Virginia describes in "Mrs. Dalloway".
and btw Clarissa was NOT Richard's editor, cuz that would have been too complicated the book says.
I recommend you all to read this book "The Hours". It makes you understand the movie better. More about what happened when Clarissa and Richard were young so such.
I hope this short brief is making you understand some things a little better. :)
Thanks, Minimuffin11. I'm a little disappointed to know the truth, but I guess how an author's characters behave is his/her prerogative. Regarding reading the book, I suppose that's a good idea, but I also wonder whether the film makers intentionally made Clarissa's & Richard's relationship somewhat ambiguous.
