Would the maids really have had that much attitude?

I can't help but wonder if the maids would be that openly annoyed with Virginia. It just seems odd to me especially when Nellie exaggeratedly removes her apron when she needs to catch the train to London. And wouldn't she like the chance to get away for awhile? I mean yes, Virginia is a little...not the easiest to get along with at times but would they really show that much understated disrespect?

Ha! No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Servants are like little kids. They'll get away with as much as they can. Clearly, Nellie had worked for Virginia for quite some time and knew (from experience) exactly how far she could push her.

We'll see whose the filthiest person alive! We'll just see!

They also seemed to be making a sport out of trying to intimidate Wolff. One was asking the other "did you give her that 'look' when she asked you to do that" and when Virginia's sister comes, she asks Virginia, "you aren't intimidated by the servants now are you?" And when Virginia's husband finds her at the train station he says "we have an obligation to eat so and so's meal that she prepared".
